Crowns & Bridges
What is a crown?
A crown is a custom-made cover placed over a damaged or weakened tooth. Crowns are used to restore teeth that are broken, decayed, or have large fillings. They can also improve the appearance of a tooth with a discoloured filling, protect a tooth that has had a root canal, or help secure a bridge or denture.
Why would I need a crown?
- To fix a broken or weakened tooth
- To cover a discoloured filling for a better look
- To protect a tooth after a root canal
- To help hold a bridge or denture securely in place
What is a bridge?
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by using the surrounding teeth to support the replacement. The adjacent teeth are fitted with crowns, and the missing tooth is securely attached to these crowns, creating a permanent solution.
How is a crown prepared?
The process typically requires two visits:
- During the first visit, the dentist will prepare your tooth, and a digital scan will be sent to a lab where your crown is carefully crafted.
- In the meantime, a temporary crown may be placed so you can continue using the tooth while waiting for your permanent crown.
What happens between visits?
If needed, a temporary crown is placed, which may look different from your natural teeth but is only used until your permanent crown is ready.
When will I get the permanent crown?
During your second visit, the final crown is securely bonded to your tooth with a special adhesive.
How long do crowns last?
With proper care, crowns can last between 5 to 10 years or longer. Treat your crown like a natural tooth by brushing and flossing regularly.
